This will be a display
of all four AMT vinyl Star Trek figures.
First, I built the
figures and stood them up in my first display concept idea. Scotty
would be on the deck above in front of a section of bridge railing,
the rest below. The Enterprise from the TOS 3-ship set would be
included to dress up the area in front of the figures legs.

It was at this point
that I realized the figures needed some adjustments. McCoy's
body was too wide, as well as his head not being quite right and
Spock had some back problems. Kirk's
shoulders also needed adjustments, but those have already been done
as of these pictures. I also knew something was wrong with Scotty,
but I couldn't figure out what.
I stood the figures
next to each other. Unfortunately, all I have is the "after"
shot, but I figured out Scotty's problem - height. He was as tall
as the rest of the figures. In fact, all four figures were almost
exactly the same height.

Since it's easier
to cut off than it is to add on, I used Spock as the reference and
shortened the other figures accordingly. I used a ruler as a guide
to check the relative heights.

Kirk and McCoy were
shortened at their boots. I cut the boots off at the pant cuff,
hollowed out the cuff a bit and sunk the boots back into them. It
was also at this point that I modified McCoy's
body width. Scotty was also shortened
considerably.

| Satisfied
with the height adjustments, I decided to focus on other display ideas.
the bridge rail idea was easy, but didn't feel "distinctive".
While working on The Bridge, I took out the blueprint sheet of Kirk's
chair. Some calculations, some cardboard, some masking tape and a
few hours and I had a 1/6 scale chair to go with Kirk. |
